Engage, Upcycle and Enable

The Trashy Artisan Cooperative aims to make, sell and teach others how to make products from items destined for landfill. All our products are handmade locally on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.

Bringing Upcycling to the people.

I’ll be honest, Tuesday 7th November 2017 was the first Melbourne Cup event I have ever been to. I have not been immune to the hysteria that normally accompanies The Cup and I have been known to don a crazy hat. But this year The Trashy Artisan Cooperative was fortunate to be asked by In Noosa Magazine to participate in a  wearable art and upcycled clothing parade as part of the festivities and what better way to make upcycling discards fashionable than on ‘the day that stops the nation’?

So with my trolley laden with industrial and commercial discards I went to Sunshine Beach State High School and St Andrews Anglican College and challenged the fashion and arts students to get creative. And boy did they come to the party. The Patrons at Padstows in Noosa were stunned and delighted to see what these talented students came up with. Can’t wait to do it again next year!

Creativity abounds

Today I attended the Horizon Festival’s wearable at competition at Eumundi and I was blown away by the creativity that people on the coast and beyond have. I had no idea how big event this was and that how far afield contestants came from. It was a real credit to the organisers of Horizon festival and the Eumundi Square shop holders. The judges had an impossible task. The Trashy Artisan entered for a bit of fun and to meet like minded creatives (of which there were many!!) so was surprised and honoured to get a highly commended prize (yay) and would like to thank my co designer Michelle Budd and my “Personal Assistant” for the day Sandra Clifford. Below are a few of the highlights. Big congrats to everybody for their amazing efforts.

Pomona! Upcoming workshop!

Our next workshop is on the 12th August 2017 at the Lawson shed in Pomona. Learn what to do with those old t-shirts that are too ratty to send to the charity shop. Book via email or phone.

Still Waters – Fast Legs

The Trashy Artisan has been a little like the duck; looking calm and serene drifting over the pond, but those little legs have been going furiously. So here is a quick list of what we are up to to date. (No Frills)

  • T- shirt yarn and VHS Creativity workshops in Peregian, starting to book workshops in Pomona, Noosa, Cooroy and Nambour
  • Applying for a tender for a tip shop on the Sunshine Coast
  • Making connections and spreading the word at U3A, Noosa Parks Association, World Environment Day, Noosa Festival of Water, The Circular Experiment and Peregian Springs State school.
  • Developing our Memorandum of Understanding to work with our ever increasing network of creatives including Troy the Bike Guy, Redeeming Features (Tech jewellery) and Primal School. We have a glassblower, wood worker, kombucha leather maker and we are tracking down a welder to start doing workshops. (once we find a space)
  • We have an amazing agreement with the fabulous Todd to share some incredible woodworking equipment – we just need to find a space.
  • We now have over 160 followers on Facebook  and around 100 on our email list so now is the time to start getting together and sharing ideas and having maker workshops. (I’ll keep you posted!)
  • We have collected a lot of shop fittings to display our discards – care of Noosa Civic – when we have a space

So as you can see there is a recurring theme – finding a space.  Let me know if you hear of anything (keeping in mind we have no capital!!)
